What you can do

  • Move and resize the subject box with a pointer or keyboard before creating the first cutout.
  • Compare the cutout with the original, refine either side of the edge with a pointer or keyboard, and undo refinement marks.
  • Download a transparent PNG or WebP, or choose a white or custom background for PNG, WebP, or JPG output.

Before you start

  • Clear contrast between the subject and background produces the strongest starting cutout; fine hair, blur, transparency, and low-contrast edges may need refinement.
  • Background removal supports source images up to 24 megapixels and uses a bounded working copy to keep browser memory use predictable.
  • The local cutout engine loads only when you create a cutout, so the first run can take longer than later browser-cached runs.

How it works

Common questions

Is the background removed on a server?

No. Background removal runs locally in your browser, so photos never leave your device.

What output formats are available?

PNG is the default for transparency, WebP where supported, and JPG when you pick a solid background.

Can I correct the cutout edge?

Yes. Mark missing subject areas with Keep and unwanted areas with Remove, then apply the refinement. Undo immediately removes a pending mark or restores the prior applied cutout.

How should I place the subject box?

Keep the full subject inside the box with a small margin, while excluding as much unrelated background as practical. You can move and resize the box before creating the cutout.

Which images need refinement?

Fine hair, transparent details, motion blur, and edges with little contrast may need Keep or Remove marks. The finished mask is applied at the source image dimensions.
